Sprint Nextel agrees to start unlocking phones

Hotness! I'm glad someone is finally making some moves toward more open cell networks, it's about time that carriers realized that subsidizing locked phones is stupid and in the long run just aggravates customers by locking them into a particular provider. I hope the other cell providers in the US take the hint and follow suit...

An under-the-radar class action lawsuit against Sprint Nextel is winding its way towards a settlement this week, and it contains a pretty huge concession by Sprint: the company will unlock phones for both current and former customers, and will begin training its customer service reps on how to connect non-Sprint phones to its network. The settlement was tentatively approved by a California judge on October 2, but hasn't had a final approval hearing yet, according to Sprint -- but it's still a huge win for US consumers, who haven't been able to buy mainstream unlocked phones from any of the major carriers. Of course, since Sprint's network is CDMA, unlocked phones will only work on other CDMA carriers like Verizon -- and there's no guarantees those companies will be happy about it -- but at this point we'll take whatever we can get.

After 34 years of working for basic fairness for all Oregonians and their families, Oregon has taken a historic step forward by passing two basic fairness laws--one banning discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and one creating Domestic Partnerships. After so many years of struggle, we are now poised to end discrimination against and provide security to GLBT Oregonians and their families. This is a HUGE victory! Now the work begins to ensure that both of these laws stay laws.
A group of vocal and organized opponents have collected signatures to force a public vote our new laws. These opponents don't represent the values of most Oregonians... but they shouldn't be underestimated.

I'm still working on my damn ePortfolio... got the main things done... I'm down to revising my assignments and putting them online... UGH this feels like it's taking forever! I'm so gonna pass out at school tomorrow! :-( Oh well, at least I know I'll get this darn thing done! If anyone is insane enough to actually want to see the fruits of my labors, you can look here.

Muahaha I am stoked to have a few weeks off to relax... and next term I'm going to pace myself better so I don't have to do this again! >:P

So I found out tonight that one of my close close friends is in the hospital tonight. She's been having a lot of trouble lately keeping her life together, and I think she finally got to the breaking point. The problem is that she doesn't have any insurance and her parents have all but abandoned her... she feels that she needs to move out of where she's living currently, and since I'm pretty much the only person left on this planet who seems to give a shit about her, I'm doing everything I can to help her get through this and get back on her feet. I'm struggling with it a lot, but I hope that I can keep my shit together and support her in her endeavors to rebuild her life. It's painful watching people you care about tear themselves apart. :( I just hope we can put her back together again, even if it takes time.

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot... when she called me to ask me for help getting out of the hospital (so she doesn't have to pay $1500 per day), I offered to go see her. I nearly threw up twice and started crying a few times, the psych ward is really depressing. I have to hope that she'll be ok.
